At the other end of the range, VELO reaches 17mg, while ZYN's Menthol Ice Ultra is available in 16.5mg per pouch.

However, it's worth remembering that nicotine strength and flavour intensity aren't the same thing. A lower-strength pouch can still have a pronounced mint or cooling sensation.

Higher-Strength ZYN and VELO Pouches

VELO offers 17mg versions of flavours such as Freezing Peppermint, Peppermint Storm and Ruby Berry.

ZYN, meanwhile, reaches 16.5mg with Menthol Ice Ultra.

That's a much closer comparison than the older 13.5mg versus 17mg figures suggested.

And the stronger number doesn't necessarily mean better flavour, quicker absorption or a more enjoyable experience.

Not necessarily.

Nicotine strength measures how much nicotine the pouch contains, usually expressed as milligrams per pouch.

Flavour intensity depends on different factors, including the flavouring, pouch formulation and cooling ingredients.

David's reviews illustrate this rather well. Some lower-strength products had an immediate and recognisable flavour, while certain stronger products were more subdued.

ZYN vs VELO Flavours: Which Brand Delivers?

Now for the interesting bit.

Across David's reviews, we tested 11 ZYN flavours and 10 VELO flavours, covering everything from mellow spearmint to rich tropical fruit and seriously icy peppermint.

And what became clear is that there's plenty of variation within each brand, not just between them.

Some flavours were remarkably accurate. Others needed more intensity, better balance or simply a little more staying power.

If you're a fan of mint flavours, both brands have plenty to offer.

ZYN Spearmint vs VELO Bright Spearmint

These two are particularly interesting because they performed well without relying on an overpowering menthol blast.

ZYN Spearmint earned 5/5, delivering a sweet, mellow flavour reminiscent of spearmint chewing gum.

David found the flavour developed almost immediately and remained consistent for around 30–40 minutes.

VELO Bright Spearmint scored 4/5, with a similarly soft, sweet flavour and very little harsh cooling.

It reached its peak within the first two or three minutes, remaining enjoyable for approximately 35 minutes before beginning to fade.

Both are good examples of how a mint flavour can be refreshing without being overwhelmingly icy.

ZYN edged ahead in David's scoring, but there wasn't a dramatic difference in how long the flavours lasted.

What About Stronger Mint Flavours?

VELO Freezing Peppermint takes things in a completely different direction.

David described it as an intensely cold peppermint flavour, with pronounced cooling and around 35 minutes of noticeable peppermint. It earned 4/5.

ZYN Menthol Ice, tested in its 13.5mg version, scored 3/5.

It delivered the straightforward menthol experience promised on the tub, but David found it less interesting than some of ZYN's other flavours.

So, in this particular comparison, VELO Freezing Peppermint impressed us more than ZYN Menthol Ice.

That doesn't make VELO the better mint brand overall, especially when ZYN Spearmint was one of our highest-rated flavours.

It's also worth making clear that our Menthol Ice tasting observations relate to the reviewed 13.5mg version, not the newer 16.5mg Ultra variant.

Fruit Flavours: ZYN vs VELO

This is where both brands really showed what they could do.

ZYN Black Cherry vs VELO Ruby Berry

Both products earned 5/5, and both impressed David with their natural fruit flavours.

ZYN Black Cherry delivers a rich, juicy cherry flavour almost immediately. David particularly enjoyed its accuracy, describing a taste much closer to fresh fruit than cherry sweets.

The opening was especially strong, before the flavour gradually became more mellow.

VELO Ruby Berry takes a different approach.

David found it tasted like fresh strawberries, with an immediate burst of fruit that settled into a softer sweetness.

The flavour remained enjoyable for around 30 minutes before beginning to fade.

Neither product relies on heavy cooling to make the fruit stand out.

If you enjoy rich cherry flavours, ZYN Black Cherry is a convincing option. If fresh strawberry is more your thing, VELO Ruby Berry is equally impressive.

ZYN Chili Guava vs VELO Tropical Mango

Another two five-star flavours, but with very different personalities.

ZYN Chili Guava combines tropical guava sweetness with a warming chilli sensation. It's one of the more unusual flavours in ZYN's range, and the fruit-and-spice pairing helped it stand out in David's review.

VELO Tropical Mango is a little more straightforward, concentrating on delivering a rich, juicy mango flavour.

David particularly liked the accuracy of the mango, finding that it developed into a rounded, full-bodied taste that remained consistent for approximately 30 minutes.

Both delivered strong results, but for different reasons.

Chili Guava is the more unusual combination, while Tropical Mango does an excellent job of delivering a familiar fruit flavour.

Where Did the Flavours Fall Short?

Not every pouch lived up to expectations.

ZYN Citrus scored 3/5, with David finding its citrus flavour a little too subtle. The fruit notes were recognisable, but he wanted considerably more intensity.

VELO Tropical Ice also earned 3/5, although for a different reason. The tropical fruit combination had potential, but the cooling tended to overpower some of its flavour.

VELO Orange Ice was another three-star product, with its orange flavour beginning to fade after approximately 25 minutes.

These are useful examples of why we wouldn't declare either brand better based on its flavour range alone.

More cooling doesn't automatically mean better flavour, and a promising flavour name doesn't guarantee a great pouch.

Which Brand Wins for Flavour?

Based on our reviews, there's no outright winner.

Both brands earned multiple five-star ratings, and both had flavours that didn't quite hit the mark.

ZYN impressed us with Black Cherry, Chili Guava and Spearmint, while VELO performed particularly well with Ruby Berry and Tropical Mango.

ZYN vs VELO Pouch Size, Moisture and Comfort

ZYN Mini vs Regular

ZYN Mini pouches are smaller and generally drier, while ZYN Regular pouches are larger and tend to have a moister texture.

David particularly liked the flatter shape of ZYN Coffee Mini, finding it comfortable and a pleasant change from larger Slim-style pouches.

Other ZYN products delivered a different experience, especially those with a moister format and more immediate flavour release.

That variation is worth bearing in mind when comparing ZYN with another brand.

VELO Mini vs Slim

VELO also offers Mini and Slim formats.

VELO Mini pouches are smaller, while VELO Slim pouches have a longer, narrower shape.

In David's VELO review, Bright Spearmint stood out for its comfortable feel and soft flavour, without an excessive icy sensation.

Freezing Peppermint provided a very different experience, with far more pronounced cooling.

However, stronger cooling shouldn't automatically be confused with a less comfortable pouch. They're two separate characteristics.

Which Is More Comfortable, ZYN or VELO?

We wouldn't give either brand a definitive win here.

David reported positive experiences with products from both ranges, but pouch comfort wasn't assessed in a controlled head-to-head test using identical specifications.

Ultimately, shape, moisture, cooling and personal preference all make a difference.

It's another reason to compare individual products rather than assume one brand is always more comfortable.

Which Lasts Longer: ZYN or VELO?

If there's one thing people often want from a nicotine pouch, it's flavour that doesn't disappear after five minutes.

Fortunately, David's reviews recorded how long each flavour remained noticeable, giving us something useful to compare.

ZYN vs VELO Price: Which Brand Offers Better Value?

Here's one area where ZYN has a clear advantage at Alternix: the buy more, save more deals.

Both ZYN and VELO have standard cans priced at £6.50, so if you're only looking at the single-can price, there isn't much between them.

But ZYN offers additional savings that VELO currently doesn't.

With our ZYN buy more, save more deals, the price of a standard 20-pouch can can come down to £4.50. That's just 22.5p per pouch, compared with 32.5p for a 20-pouch VELO Slim can at £6.50.

Of course, these are Alternix prices, not necessarily what you'll find at every UK retailer. The ZYN buy more, save more deal price also depends on meeting the conditions of the offer.

After reviewing 21 flavours across the two brands, a few things stood out.

What We Like About ZYN

Some genuinely excellent fruit flavours

Black Cherry and Chili Guava were two of David's standout products. Both earned five stars, although for very different reasons.

A great softer-mint option

ZYN Spearmint impressed with its mellow, chewing-gum-like flavour and consistent performance.

More choice at the lower end of the strength range

ZYN offers 1.5mg options, below VELO's current 4mg starting point.

Better value through buy more, save more deals

At Alternix, ZYN's buy more, save more deals can bring a 20-pouch can down to £4.50. The £2.99 10-pouch cans are another useful option for buying a smaller quantity.

What Could Be Better About ZYN?

Some flavours are a little too subtle

Citrus was the clearest example, delivering recognisable fruit flavour but not quite enough intensity.

Not every cooling flavour is particularly exciting

Menthol Ice delivered plenty of cooling, but David found the tested 13.5mg version less interesting than some other flavours in the range.

Excellent natural fruit flavours

Ruby Berry and Tropical Mango both received five stars, with their flavour accuracy being a particular highlight.

A varied mint range

From the mellow sweetness of Bright Spearmint to the intense cooling of Freezing Peppermint, VELO offers different experiences within the same flavour family.

Some impressive flavour longevity

Crispy Peppermint was still noticeable at around 45 minutes, making it one of the better-performing VELO products for duration.

What Could Be Better About VELO?

Cooling can overpower the fruit

Tropical Ice was a good example, with its prominent cooling reducing the impact of the tropical fruit flavours.

Some flavours fade relatively quickly

Orange Ice began losing its fruit flavour after around 25 minutes, while Strawberry Ice remained consistent for approximately 25–30 minutes.

More expensive when comparing current offers

VELO's £6.50 single-can price is the same as ZYN's regular price, but without equivalent save deals at Alternix. Its 15-pouch Mini cans can also work out more expensive per pouch.

So, ZYN vs VELO. Have we got a winner?

Well, after testing 21 flavours between them, it's a closer contest than you might think.

Both brands delivered some excellent results. ZYN Black Cherry and VELO Ruby Berry were particularly impressive for their natural fruit flavours, while Chili Guava and Tropical Mango showed two very different ways of getting tropical fruit right.

The mint flavours were interesting too. ZYN Spearmint earned five stars for its soft, sweet profile, while VELO Bright Spearmint offered a similarly balanced experience. For stronger cooling, VELO Freezing Peppermint performed better in our testing than the ZYN Menthol Ice variant we reviewed.

And flavour longevity? There's not much separating them. Both brands have products that remain enjoyable for around 30–45 minutes.

Where ZYN does pull ahead is value. With buy more, save more deals bringing qualifying standard cans down to £4.50 and smaller 10-pouch cans available for £2.99, it offers more flexibility and a lower price per pouch at Alternix.
